Development

On 16 December 2013, Yash Raj Films announced the project with Khan as the main lead and Sharma as the director. On 25 March 2014, it was announced that the three-time Academy Award winner make-up artist Greg Cannom is going to develop the look of Khan in the film. Khan's underwent3D scanning for his look as a young boy Earlier reported, Khan was to play a 17 year old boy in the film, but the actor denied the news, claiming that he is not doing the role of a 17 year old.

Filming

Principal photography of the film began in July 2014. The film was shot in Mumbai, Croatia, London and Delhi.  The film is the first ever to be shot at the prestigious Madame Tussauds in London. On 7 August 2015, it was announced that the filming of the project was completed.

Release

Fan was scheduled to release in early 2015, but owing to the injuries sustained by Khan during the filming of Happy New Year, the film's release date was postponed to 14 August 2015. The post-production work involving complex visual effects pushed the release of Fan once again to early 2016.^[ Now the film is scheduled for release on 15 April 2016.

Marketing

The first teaser was released on 9 July 2015. On 4 August 2015, the first teaser poster was released The logo of the film, the first of its kind with a collage of pictures of Khan's real fans, was released on 23 October 2015The second poster was released on 27 October 2015. The second teaser was released on Khan's 50th birthday.
